This video looks at why women and people of color are often overlooked in autism diagnoses. Historical criteria were based on studies of white males, missing the unique presentations in women and diverse ethnic groups. Women often mask their symptoms to fit societal norms, and cultural differences affect how autism manifests, leading to misdiagnoses. We need more inclusive criteria for accurate diagnoses for everyone.

There is a lot of confusion around the appropriate terms for neurodivergent and neurodiversity. In this video, I explain the difference and how one person can be neurodivergent but never neurodiverse. Neurodiversity refers to a group of people in which there are multiple neurotypes. I'm a group with only neurodivergent people, there is no neurodiversity. This group is not neurodiverse! Diversity means a mixture in a group while divergent refers to an individual who differs from the majority neurotype. It's important to gwt the language right in order to be truly neuroaffirming.
